LIGHTWORKER’S WAY: PART 12
A COCKTAIL OF PROTECTION – PART 3: What You Think About, You Bring About (Protecting Yourself with Your Thoughts and Emotions)

Christine Whelan
My mom once shared with me something she had just heard. “It’s healthy to feel sorry for yourself for 20 minutes a day.” Now, whether that is true or not – or beneficial for some parts of you and an obstacle for others – I held on to that statement all these years and use it periodically to give myself permission to mope with self-pity. This is how I get in touch with my needs.
I was there this morning.
And then an image came into my mind’s eye – my vision board. So, like an obedient little soul, I searched through the boxes I have yet to unpack in my new home of almost one month, and found my most recent vision board, made last February. The first part that jumped out at me was in the center where I pasted words from a random magazine, “I planned it this way.” This spun me around and planted me in front of a discovery. As unexpected and as scary as that very moment was, that was the way it was supposed to be – because I pre-set it that way.
Oh ya.
And oh, how this changes the thought waves and the resulting emotional reactions that went dancing through my morning system, along with my second cup of coffee.
Welcome to my first column written in my new abode. With an eye-opening reading done in April at my previous home warning me I needed to “go back to where I felt vibrant of youth” and “return to the water”, combined with evident and more subtle signs from the Universe, I would have been a hypocrite to deny myself this opportunity of recovery, regenerating and re-birth.
And here I am. You can even hear the waves from my front porch! And now the next phase of my life is awaiting me – whatever that may be. Of course, being a lightworker, you can expect that the transition has been quite eventful and full of tests and challenges!! But first…
Looking back in hindsight, I can say that the two pieces of the puzzle that is me that got me through this far were my thoughts and feelings.
FEELINGS
There is such a long list of emotions ranging from extremely positive to drastically negative and I’m just not going to go there. For the purpose of this moment in time, I’m going to use three of the top positives and three of the top negatives to make my point.
Positive Emotions
- Love
- Acceptance
- Empowerment
Negative Emotions
- Fear
- Unexpressed anger and resentment
- Powerlessness
Allowing yourself to feel unconditional love, accepting that whatever is happening at each moment is happening for many reasons and as it should be, and living your life in such a way that you feel in control of your thoughts, feelings, decisions, actions and reactions draws more of the same – more positive people, events and spirits – into your life.
Anger, powerlessness, and fear are like a smoke detector. When a smoke detector goes off in your home, it means to either take some kind of action or get out. This is also true if you are experiencing anger, powerlessness or fear; take action or get out of the situation you’re in! Think of it this way – what would happen if a fire started in your home, and you’ve taken down your smoke detector? Not paying attention to your negative emotions is like taking down your smoke detector in your home.
On this side, negative feelings can warn you against:
- being in a situation where your personal control is being stolen from you
- someone violating one or more of your human rights
- having to use anger as a secondary emotion in order to cover up a more vulnerable emotion (such as fear, hurt, disappointment, betrayal)
- having your past continue to be triggered.
From the spiritual world, being aware of experiencing a negative feeling such as anger, fear, frustration or stress and realizing there is no cause for you personally to feel the emotion can indicate to you that you are close to a negative energy and need to do something about it or get away from it. Being aware of having a feeling that is not yours can give you your more power when responding to the outside world. Notice in my little list of negative emotions that I included “unexpressed” anger and resentment. In my research and exposure, holding on to negative feelings towards others and one’s self is equivalent to sending out a personal invitation to any negative, needy and greedy energy that is interested in manipulating energy away from someone. Can you see how this could cause a downward spiral for anyone?
My feeling is that it’s wise to take regular inventory for positive or negative moods and thoughts coursing around inside one’s beautiful mind -- check in with the emotional guidance system.
Alter Mood in Times of Need
There are times – oh yes, there are times – when most of us get into a trap when our moods start to work against us, during times of anxiety, fear, anger, stress.
There’s always the “attitude of gratitude”: Take a moment today for yourself and make a list of ten things you normally take for granted in your life. During a time of need, focus on this list to shift your mood.
It’s Personal: Find something that works for you. You know, makes you happy, makes you feel safe, makes you feel strong, makes you feel confident, makes you feel love, makes you feel acceptance and belonging, etc. You get my point. A drummer said to me that he visualized playing drums at times of need.
My Personal Favourite: I like to start and end each day with watching comedy like a sitcom, movie or stand up. I really do feel focusing on something that makes me laugh and raises my vibration level saves my energetic butt sometimes!!
THOUGHTS
In being typical to a lightworker state of mind, I question and criticize many laws in this world. However, one law I firmly stand behind is the universal Law of Attraction. I believe in it, I practice it, I observe it, I am still awed when I watch it play out, and I teach others about it. So, it follows that I firmly believe that whatever I think about, I bring about. Period.
I also believe that thought creates mood, spinning us back to the above points. I’ll not be redundant here. But to add, you are in charge of your reality. Playing the victim to your world creates negative thought, negative mood, negative toxins within, and personal, negative energy (aura). Outside negative energy of all forms, entities and spiritual activity thrives on this.
Thoughts attract spirits like a magnet. It’s up to you what types of spirits you attract – those of the light, or those of the darkness. If you have had a negative spirit bothering you in the past and you’ve done the work to keep it away, a simple philosophy helps with your maintenance plan, so to speak. My kids and I reminded ourselves periodically, and quickly, by using this chant, “Don’t think about him. Don’t say his name in your head. Don’t talk about him. Don’t say his name out loud.” And then most importantly, move on, thought-wise.
Mental and Emotional Clutter
Stuffing down what you wish you could say but chose not to and tucking away emotions you don’t want to feel can weaken you and cause nasty toxins within, drawing unwanted energy to you, again, like a magnet. Meditation is important to clean up, strengthen and focus your mind and spirit. Regular, quiet, alone time is also important for grounding. Journalling works like magic. It can organize and clarify your thoughts and feelings, as well as express and release them. I am the poster child for personal writing.
INTENT
One of the most important factors in protecting one’s self is more of a karmic thing. In each life situation, ask yourself these questions: Are you meaning to hurt another? Are you meaning to anger another? Are you meaning to overpower another? Are you meaning to get revenge? Are you meaning to exploit, take advantage or take for granted another? Am I trying to manipulate in anyway? These are very hard questions to answer since many times, our motivation to act or react is one of the above reasons – and we do it so automatically. It’s often just a part of our system of survival – how we get our needs met. But the methods we might have learned to use (from way back) may be creating and attracting negative energy, and working against us! If you answer yes to any of these questions above, you are attracting negative energy, both living or spiritual.
No worries – each and every one of us has the power to change what we discover works against us.
So, enjoy the incredible season of Autumn, my friends. A wonderful and quite appropriate quote by one of my favourite authors has been nudged upon me. I will end off by sharing it with you.
“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.” – Dr. Seuss.
Think about it.
Love and Light, my friends xo, Christine
