STAYING LIGHT DURING THE DARK DAYS
I woke up this morning, slid on my long sweater and new slippers, crept down the stairs in the dar….. and lit several candles in the kitchen to make coffee….
Happy Mabon!
This year, Mabon landed on Wednesday, September 22, along with the Autumn Equinox. It’s the time of year in the Fall when we have equal hours of daylight and darkness, representing balance. It’s also a time to give thanks for what the earth has provided; the fruits of our gardens and the labours in life. It also is a time to give thanks to our waning sunlight. This year is especially powerful as Thursday, September 23 is the full moon. It’s a time of letting go of what no longer serves us.
I use the teachings of Mabon to remind me of how to deal with these upcoming, dark days. Our bodies naturally shift to adapt and therefore, I find that going with the flow of our earth’s changes is the first and most important approach in dealing with the winter blues. This can be challenging as today’s society teaches us to ignore how our body is made up to naturally go with the flow of it’s environment; we rely on artificial light to keep ourselves going. As “humans being”, it is natural for us to feel the urge to retreat into ourselves, as many animals hibernate during the winter. It is a good time to reflect on what we’ve accomplished in the brighter, warmer, active days. It is also a good time to re-generate. We can choose to accept or resist what can come naturally during these months.
While only 2-3% experience symptoms debilitating enough to be considered Seasonal Affective Disorder, or its appropriate acronym S.A.D., a reported 51% of the general public experience the winter blues or blaas. If you are a Lightworker, you are sensitive. And if you are sensitive, you probably have these issues you deal with during the dark days.
These symptoms are not just all in our heads. There are concrete, physiological reasons we feel symptoms of lethargy and negative moods in the winter. It is common knowledge that a house plant needs a certain amount of sunlight each day to grow strong and healthy and maintain its usual behaviour. We as human beings are no different.
As soon as the sun goes down, a hormone is released from the brain called Melatonin, which regulates the body’s 24-hour clock, determining when we fall asleep and when we wake up. As soon as the sun comes up, a hormone is released called Serotonin, which can change a person’s mood. So, during times of more darkness then light, there is more Melatonin and less Serotonin triggered. The body and mind will want to go to sleep resulting in feeling lethargic, as well as shift towards a more negative and depressed mood.
Another reason for the lack of energy and negative moods is living with less frequent doses of Endorphins due to being less active during the winter months. Endorphins can be considered “nature’s anti-depressant”. They are neurotransmitters in the brain that can reduce emotional and physical pain, while raising one’s mood. There are different ways we can kick in a dose of endorphins, some being healthy and some being not so healthy. Twenty minutes of dancing or walking should do the trick. A good laughing fit will work. And yes, sex is high on the list – even a quickie will do it! Chocolate will also work, and unfortunately so does any form of carbohydrate. We’ve heard of the term “emotional eating”. This is the action behind the term. We eat anything sweet or starchy and we get a dose of “nature’s anti-depressant”. So it makes sense that we gain weight in the cold, dark months. We are trying to eat our way to a happier state of mind by kicking in our endorphins.
More suggestions:
Lightworkers require more water than most as water is transformed into energy and lightworkers live with a higher level of life force energy, so drink up and as much as you can!
While going with the natural urge to hibernate, make sure you balance out with staying social; face to face is the best, phone calls are second best; internet can really help. Since I spend half of my working hours in my home office alone, I find it crucial for my well being to daily connect with others via e-mail and on sites such as Facebook.
Another way to increase energy and mood at anytime of the year, not just during winter, is to make sure you meet as many of your needs as you can. Many don’t know what their needs are other than the needs for survival such as food, water, shelter and physical (sexual) needs. So, the first step is to work on identifying those needs.
There are several ways to identify some of your needs. You can sort your life into categories then come up with at least one activity you would like to do in each category. For instance, categories you could use could be: creative expression, physical release, emotional release, down time, social time, mental stimulation, trying something new and tying up loose ends. Examples for these categories could be: working on a scrapbook, going for a morning walk, watching your favourite sitcom (laughter is great for kicking in endorphins and it burns up to 40 calories), keeping a daily journal, 30 minutes lying down with the headphones on listening to your favourite music, getting together with a friend for tea after supper, reading a chapter or two of a book with your morning coffee, meditating 20 minutes a day (getting in touch with your inner light to compensate for the lack of outer light by working with your solar plexus chakra), getting a different hair style and cleaning out the closet you’ve been meaning to clean out for the last 2 months. If you can select activities that you can do outside in the sunlight, bonus! Just sitting at the window with the sun shining on your face can really help. I look forward to the cooler days as it is the time I knit slippers and Mr. Bean-style teddy bears, which is therapeutic for me. You can even multi-task by identifying activities that can fall under more than one life category, meeting different types of needs.
If you are able to keep track and adjust your weekly activity in this way, you will be shifting your life towards a sense of balance, creating a sense of inner contentment, and therefore a higher level of energy and positive attitude. Try making a list of all your summer activities and a list of your winter activities. Do your winter activities fulfill the needs that your summer activities do? Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% what we do with it so by simply accepting the situation we are in, that we have much less opportunity to increase what gives us energy and lightens our moods, we can incorporate little cubby holes of activity into our daily lives that will help us live better and happier lives through the winter. We need to get creative. And most of all, we need to remember….. we are worth it!!
Love and Light, my friends.

What is a Raindrop Practitioner?
with Sheri Webber
A Raindrop Practitioner is a person who has received the required training (72+ hours of Certification Training including a CARE Intensive, Practicums in Vitaflex and Raindrop Technique, Train Vitaflex and Raindrop as well as pass a Return Demonstration). CARE stands for Center for Aromatherapy Research and Education, Inc. (www.raindroptraining.com). This is the only place that you can get the appropriate training that will lead to becoming a Certified Raindrop Practitioner. There are only 4 Certified Trainers in Canada and 5 Certified Raindrop Practitioners in Ontario. There are only 11 Certified Raindrop Practitioners in Canada. This contributes to many people not knowing what the Raindrop Technique is and how wonderful the results can be.
Being a Certified Raindrop Practitioner is important because you must meet minimum requirements to renew your certification and keep current with techniques. This designation is important to me and what I can offer my clients. The Raindrop, while the name can be misleading on what it really can do, is an amazing modality that harnesses the use of therapeutic-grade essential oils. I have seen the benefit of these oils and this technique provide lasting results for many different concerns that clients come to see me for.
Can you tell me how a treatment is given? Do you put the oils on certain spots on the body?
The Raindrop is a series of movements using Vitaflex on the feet where the spine is represented (much like Reflexology) and the back. We start at the feet and apply oils to both feet one oil at a time. Then we have the client turn over so we can also apply them to the back using Vitaflex. This process takes about 45-60 minutes. The Raindrop Technique as described on my website was originally created for Scoliosis but there are so many more benefits in its use that I always recommend a client to try it. The oils can also be modified to address specific medical concerns a client has. Initially, I always have a client do the Raindrop as it is meant to be done and add or make changes upon follow-up sessions.
What are some of the results you have seen from this treatment?
The simplest way to know that this process is working is to take a client's height at the beginning of a session and then again at the end. The change in height that I have seen ranges from no change, which occurred with a scoliosis client and follow-up session showed a 1/4" change where the initial one didn't show any, to 1-3/4" change. My average is usually around 1/2" difference in height. If the client continued with the sessions, not only would they be feeling better but also could in fact sustain this height back. An example is my Mom, who sustained 1/4" of height back due to continued used of this amazing modality. In addition to the height change, a client feels lighter, clearer, very relaxed and calm (Euphoric even). I have yet to witness a client who didn't like it and didn't feel better in some way afterwards. The other thing to consider is that the Raindrop can take up to a week to allow the body to make the changes it needs. A client must drink lots of water so the toxins that the Raindrop has stirred up can be released.
I have seen someone who had the onset of the flu and within 24-36 hours felt better compared to those who had been suffering around them. The others had been sick for almost a week or more at a time. So again, the benefits of it are numerous. My website gives some examples on what it can be used for.
One of the other modalities that are offered at Soul Comfort Wellness is the Ionic Foot Bath which if used after a Raindrop Technique session helps to reduce the effects of detoxing. Makes it gentler on the client as it gives the body a kick start by eliminating toxins already stirred up by the Raindrop in that session. This modality is also incorporated in my Oils for Emotions service. This service helps clients to address and eliminate limiting beliefs and thoughts that no longer hold true or prevent them from moving forward in an area of their life. I have seen people with depression, anxiety, nervousness and many other kinds of physical conditions. I work with my clients to gently and effectively find the therapeutic-grade essential oil(s) that will work best for them to assist in overcoming a belief or limiting thought and include the Ionic Foot Bath as a way to help the body to rid it of the toxin or physical concern associated with it.
I am of the belief that all physical concerns are all related to emotional well-being. If you want to rid your body of the pain, discomfort, in essence dis-ease, you must be willing to look at the feelings associated to it to get to the root to eliminate it and change. It is not enough to just mask it using western-medicine. Don't get me wrong, all forms of healing have a place in society. Depending on where you are in your path, will determine which direction you go. If you can, I always recommend an alternative modality, if safe to do so, and overseen by your healthcare practitioner. It is important to keep communication open with healthcare practitioners so you can best address your needs and make an informed choice on how you wish to proceed for your well-being. We often forget that WE are in control of how we got to where we are and how we correct it. My preference is to be in the driver's seat using alternative solutions. As for me personally, I didn't find that western medicine helped me as much as when I used essential oils and other modalities like the Raindrop Technique.
Soul Comfort Wellness also offers a similar service for animals, to help reduce pain, inflammation and other such concerns. Usually at a much lower cost than what can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars going to a veterinarian. Other services include Vitaflex, Emotional Release and Relaxation Massage. Some of our services include therapeutic-grade essential oils, body wrap and associated products for weight loss from natural ingredients, supplemental products to enhance well-being physically and products that help us drink the best possible water (alkaline) possible.
Soul Comfort Wellness Centre is here offer solutions and alternatives to those not finding the results in the means that they have already explored. I feel that to be truly spiritual, you are open to seeing and eliminating limiting thoughts and beliefs that no longer serve you and have bound you in some way. It is usually more effective in identifying what they are from someone who doesn't know you but listens carefully to you and offers suggestions so you can make the connection to what feels right to you. We know distinctly when we have a "Ah-Ha" moment. Our goal is to encompass the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual self in all aspects of healing. This is not meant to happen overnight but gradually at a pace that can be done gently.
In addition to this, I offer information sessions on essential oils and body slimming products. I am open to offer information sessions on other topics as they are requested as well and within my scope of knowledge. I am also a Reiki Practitioner and I am undergoing training in Therapeutic Touch and Hypnosis.
Sheri is located in St Catharines and can be contacted to set up an appointment to explore Raindrop therapy or any of the other beneficial, healing services that she offers.
The essential oil therapy is also used by Kim Reid who is a Registered Massage Therapist, located in Fonthill.

Dear Jewelee
I want to know if Iam on the right path for work by going for training for my DZ truck license?
Thanks,
John, Gemini
John,
I feel that this will be a forward move for you. I have a sense that you do tend to procrastinate and are not comfortable with change. Don't worry you must take some forward steps to make changes in your life. You have considered being an entrepreuner but this would not be a wise idea for you. You are not a risk taker and being self employed would not be a successful venture for you.
In terms of work I picture you driving the truck in a construction type setting like road or building construction. There will be a positive outcome with this training.
Peace, Jewelee
